Breast Plastic Surgery And Breast Implants - Get Informed Fast

The non-cosmetic use of breast implants is for breast reconstruction, sex reassignment surgery, and for abnormalities, usually congenital, that affect the shape and size of the breast. In breast plastic surgery, breast implants are usually used either for cosmetic reasons or to reconstruct the breast such as after a mastectomy, to correct genetic deformities or as part of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery. A bit of trivia: breast implants have been known since 1895 when they were first used to augment the size or shape of a woman's breasts. The earliest known breast implant was attempted by a Dr. Czerny, using a woman's own fatty tissue from a lipoma (a fatty tumor) on her back. Saline-filled breast implants were first manufactured in France in 1964 and were introduced by Arion with the goal of being surgically placed using smaller incisions than they had been using. In the mid 1980s, advances in manufacturing principles brought about elastomer-coated shells to decrease gel bleed. They are filled with a thicker, more cohesive gel; they are sold under restricted conditions in the U. S. and Canada, and are widely used in other countries. For women who have very little breast tissue, or for post-mastectomy reconstruction, plastic surgeons believe the silicone gel implants are superior. In patients who have more breast tissue, the saline implants can look very similar to silicone gel implants.

The non-cosmetic clinical indications for the use of breast implants are for breast reconstruction, sex reassignment surgery, and for abnormalities, usually congenital, that affect the shape and size of the breast. Non-clinical indications, which are the most common reason women get breast implants, are considered cosmetic and are not covered by any health insurers. And of all the breast plastic surgery procedures performed in 2006 in the United States, 329,000 were for breast augmentations. Back in 1962 the first woman was implanted with silicone implants. There are two primary types of breast implants: saline-filled and silicone-gel-filled implants Doctors Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow, two Houston, Texas, plastic surgeons, developed the first silicone breast prosthesis with the Dow Corning Corporation in back in 1961.

Breast Reductions Lower Cancer Risks by 50 - 70%

breast Cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in women. According to the World Health Organization, over one million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide this year alone. For women who are at high-risk for breast cancer -- especially those whose mother or sisters have breast cancer -- just knowing their high-risk status can create a life filled with anxiety, worry and a feeling of helplessness. It used to be that the only option they had to minimize their chances of getting the disease was to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy -- which is a radical elective mastectomy to remove the breasts -- a drastic step that many were understandably hesitant to take. There is now another option for woman at high risk. A recent study that observed thousands of women in the United States, Canada, Denmark and Sweden has proven that breast Reductions significantly lower the risk of a high-risk woman developing breast cancer. The study determined that breast Reductions lowered their risk by 50 to 70%. This is both exciting and promising. To give high-risk women an option, to help them take proactive measures for their own health, is rewarding both to the patients as well as to the surgeons. How does breast Reduction Minimize breast Cancer Risks? The study concluded that the more breast tissue a high-risk woman had, the more breast cells they had that could become cancerous. In other words: if the tissue was removed it would never be able to become cancerous.

Risks of Breast Augmentation

The chance of needing a blood transfusion from breast augmentation is exceptionally small. If a collection of blood occurs around the implant, it is called a hematoma. If you get a significant hematoma, you need to go back to the Operating Room to have it removed. You cannot heal properly if a hematoma is in place. At the time of this writing, our practice has had only four hematomas over a period of over six years and approximately 400 cases. INFECTION: Infection is a potential complication of any operation but can be especially serious in breast augmentation. Although every effort is made to prevent any infectious complications including use of intravenous antibiotics, placing the implant in antibiotics, placing antibiotics inside the pocket and giving postoperative antibiotics by mouth, infections can still occur.
